Younger Next Year: A Guide to Living Like 50 Until You're 80 and Beyond There are a lot of books out there about of anti-aging, but this is probably the first one put out by a major publisher that focuses specifically on the health and emotional issues of men. And this is definitely a guy's book, written by two guys — an internist who is still in his prime and a 70-year-old who still grabs his skis and hits the powder with the youngsters. Chris Crowley (the 70-year-old) wasn't always this gung-ho about being active — in fact, he professes to be in better health now than he was 20 years ago. In an amusing and freewheeling style, he explains the benefits of staying fit (you'll avoid getting cracked open like a lobster for open heart surgery, for example), and revels in the fun of being an active senior while spouting off sage advice (he explains why a heart rate monitor is absolutely necessary for an optimum cardio workout). Every so often, Dr. Lodge stops by to add an easy-to-read chapter on the science behind what Crowley is talking about.

While there's little new news here — everyone already knows that exercise and proper nutrition is vital to having a healthy old age — you will find some surprises. Crowley insists that instead of plugging away on mild, half-hour walks every day, his contemporaries should work their way up to really serious, sweat-inducing, heart-pumping exercise. He also reminds the guys that there's more to weight training than biceps curls and chest presses — you need to keep your legs strong, too. Dr. Lodge, as you might imagine, doesn't let you off the hook, either — he explains that guys who very actively pursue a healthy lifestyle can keep on going into their 80s and maybe beyond without facing the horrors of walkers and nursing homes. That's very good news, and worth working for.

But this isn't just a book to get the guys up off the couch. It looks at other aspects of aging that don't get as much attention — the need for companionship (Crowley insists the depth of a long-term commitment beats out the 25-year-old blonde beauty any day), facing the reality of retirement incomes (a tough one for a lot of men) and the need to stay involved in life. Younger Next Year, after all, is more than just a book about physical fitness — it's a lifestyle book. The life you lead now determines how young you'll be decades into the future. Guys who want to have more fun and less aches and pains when they're their fathers' age should stand up and take notice.
