So it is ironic, then, that we often wind up reviewing books that only cover one area and virtually ignore the others. Total Body Transformation is one of those rare books that actually covers all the bases. Even rarer, author Steve Ilg has created a whole 3-month program that will help you reach optimum health in body, mind and soul. And even more rare, his approach has a basis in science, along with loads of personal and anecdotal experience. Perhaps this is a roundabout way of saying that Total Body Transformation is a one-of-a-kind book.

A little background on Ilg, who has been called "the world's fittest human" by Ultra-Cycling Magazine: he is an elite athlete who has competed in several different sports, including extreme skiing, road cycling, orienteering and various forms of multi-sport competitions. In 1983, while mountain climbing, he fell 50 feet and broke his back. Instead of ending his athletic career, it only temporarily slowed him down. After healing himself through unconventional means (which included Eastern philosophy), he went on to some of his greatest achievements by winning five national and international championships in four different sports. Ilg now runs a Yoga studio, High Performance Yoga, where he teaches "Wholistic fitness" and encourages his students to become "fitness warriors." When it comes to fitness, Ilg has just about seen it all and done it all, and it shows in this book.

The 3-part, 3-month program itself, while it can be molded to nearly any fitness level, is not for the faint of heart. It's for those who really want to make serious changes in their approach to exercise and to life. Ilg's system is all encompassing. It involves all forms of exercise - cardio, strength training and Yoga - but that's only part of the equation. It also includes meditation and healthy, nutritious eating. Each element is important when it comes to getting results. Ilg teaches you to move, breathe and live consciously so that the changes you make are both powerful and organic. In addition, his program is based on the important fitness rule of periodization, which keeps the activities, and you, in a constant state of renewal, change and growth.

Even if you aren't sure you can give the commitment that Ilg's program requires, get this book anyway - you will enjoy his insight and wise words. After you've lived with the book for a while you may actually consider making the steps that it invites you to take. You already know that optimal health is about more than losing a few pounds or getting a bigger chest. Ilg can show you that the possibilities are truly endless.
