From Music Publicist to Yoga Teacher
Susan Makes the Leap

She really made the transition when she became the studio's day manager. "They said, 'You know, you should go through the teacher training so that if one of your teachers drops out, you can run in and sub the class.'" So Susan went through teacher training but only reluctantly. "The Yoga was fine," she says. "I'd already been studying Yoga seriously for a while. But it was really hard for me to get up in front of people and talk, let alone demonstrate Yoga poses!"

But something began to change. "This is when things started to almost go on automatic pilot - like I just sort of turned myself over to something," she recalls. "It's like I surrendered to whatever flow that seemed to be moving me along." Soon she was teaching at three different Yoga studios. "I never really wanted to be responsible for several classes a week - or I never expected that that's what I would want," she relates. "But I kind of let go and at roughly the same time I just woke up one day and went out to Pasadena City College and signed up. Slowly but surely everything started to piece together and it was like, 'Oh! Okay, so I guess I'm back in school and I guess I'm a Yoga teacher!'"

Originally Susan wanted to study Chinese medicine, but she switched over to psychology, which makes sense, considering what she says about Yoga: "A lot of times what's getting in the way of your ability do a pose is more just something that you have to work through on an emotional or psychological level. Yoga really asks you to open up a whole lot, and it can be really, really hard and sometimes you're not ready for it. It doesn't matter whether it's a balancing pose or a forward bend or a backbend or what-have-you. There's usually some sort of psychological dimension to it."

Through Yoga Susan discovered quite a few things about herself. "I was never very athletic when I was growing up," she remarks. "In fact, I loathed anything athletic. I was just very timid." Now, in addition to Yoga, she has taken up swimming and has recently advanced into doing flip turns. "Actually, I realized that I'm a fairly athletic person," she says. And best of all, she's found a vocation that brings her joy. "It's meaningful to be able to be a conduit for Yoga," she says. "I really love the interaction with people and I realized in the process that I love being a teacher. I plan on continuing with that with school."

Susan has come a long way from her last days in the music business when she admits, "I was drinking too much and having arguments with my boss when I really shouldn't have been." As she sees it, "Yoga has helped me open up. There was a time when I would walk into a Yoga class and say, 'I don't do handstands. I have never done handstands. I don't plan to do handstands!' And now I'm trying to force people in my class to do handstands! I'm actually demonstrating them for other people. It's just amazing. It truly is."
