Page 2: Fun Yoga for Children and Grown-Ups

Yogamazing The children in Chaz's classes range in age from four to 12. "I've worked with children that are three," he says, "but they don't seem to grasp what's really going on." Even though the age range he teaches is wide, Chaz notes that all his students want the same thing - "All kids want to have fun. It doesn't matter if they're four or 12." His approach, however, does reflect the child's age. "The goal is to make the older kids feel comfortable and not speak to them as if they were a child. The younger kids are easy to work with they're always ready to have fun and act silly." Chaz also makes an effort to bring the shy kids out of their shell and, "When it comes to the rowdy kids I often ask them to lead the class in a deep breathing exercise - it helps the child to calm down, gives them a chance to shine and to bring something positive to the class."

(Article continued below.)

Chaz points out that Yoga offers tools that even a child can take into his or her daily life.

"I emphasize breathing to the students as way of helping them to understand yoga," he says. "I teach them that by practicing Pranamaya breathing, it will give more oxygen to their lungs, increased energy, and a focused and calm mind. This comes in handy when studying, taking an exam or trying to get some sleep. If I keep the message simple enough they'll understand that Yoga is more than just the Asanas - it's about how they can discover themselves on a deeper level."

Chaz's approach has something special to offer grown-ups, too. "Adults need to relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of life," he says. "As we grow older, somewhere on the journey we lose the childlike outlook that we had. We can all learn from children - their answers are pure and from the heart. A child is always in the moment." Chaz readily admits, "I learn just as much from my son as he does from me. I discovered through my children to let go of my ego and to just enjoy the present moment."
