A Step Bench

A step bench can be one of your best fitness investments. Add a step video and you've got your cardio workout. Add dumbbells and use it as a bench for flyes, bench presses and pullovers. Keep holding those weights, stand on the bench, hang a heel off the end and do calf raises. Or ditch the weights completely and challenge yourself with decline push-ups. Not ready for decline push-ups... or regular push-ups, for that matter? Work up that upper body strength by doing knee push-ups with your hands on the step. Now turn around and do triceps dips. Do backwards lunges off the step for a bigger stretch. Lie on your stomach on your bench and do back extensions. Lie on your back on the bench and put your feet on the floor to give your crunches more oomph.

The step with separate risers is best because you can vary the height. Usually they come with four blocks - you put two on each side - but if you buy an extra set of blocks, you'll give yourself even more powerful exercises (doing step ups with three or four blocks on each side will give your butt a lot more of a burn than just two). You can create endless workout combinations with a step and a few sets of dumbbells - who needs a gym? And steps are inexpensive - you can find them new for under a hundred dollars, or look in the paper to see if someone's selling a used step. Take a step bench home from a garage sale that afternoon, start working out that evening!
