Pilates for Wimps: Total Fitness for the Partially Motivated

What is it?
A half-hour Pilates routine, with Annika Carlson instructing. Who is it for? While you might think that a workout labeled for "wimps" would be pretty easy, there are a few moves here that may be challenging for beginners. Modifications are shown, however. You will need a mat, of course — if you prefer the modified versions of the poses, you will also need a chair, pillow and a towel. What to expect: Even though you spend much of your time on a mat, Pilates isn't exactly a wimpy workout. And in spite of its title, Pilates for Wimps isn't exactly the easiest beginning Pilates routine you'll find. This is actually a good thing, since you can continue using this routine as your core becomes stronger and you become more proficient at the moves. Real beginners can start with modified poses and work their way up; those with more Pilates experience can follow along with Annika Carlson, who does the poses in a fuller form. The routine itself takes a little from both the standing and mat exercises. You warm up and end the session on your feet. In between you'll find basic mat moves like the Hundred, and some real core-challenging poses, too (beginners will definitely need some time to perfect the kneeling side kicks!). The only downside to this routine is that Carlson doesn't talk much about neutral spine, and spends almost as little time on breathing — both are important foundations in Pilates. But she's an upbeat instructor who is friendly and encouraging, and that's definitely a plus. If you're a real Pilates beginner, this workout may actually not be "wimpy" enough for you!
