MTV Power Yoga
(Paramount Home Video)
2003
What is it?
A 45-minute Power Yoga routine led by MTV Yoga's Kristin McGee. A brief Pilates segment is included at the end. Who is it for? Intermediate to advanced Power Yoga enthusiasts - you need to know what you're doing before diving into this workout! Not a lot of instructions about the poses (although McGee is pretty good about breathing cues). What to expect: This Power Yoga program begins with a series of Sun Salutations that are performed at a very quick pace, so right away you know you're in for a vigorous workout. True to the MTV spirit, you don't stay in any one pose for very long throughout the routine and those who are young, strong and flexible will get the most out of it. This is not a program for Yoga purists - there is no discussion of spirituality, little instruction when it comes to posture details and the Final Relaxation lasts for about a minute (which, of course, doesn't preclude you from staying longer if you want). All these caveats aside, those who are looking for an active, strength-building Power Yoga routine, and who are very familiar with the poses, will really enjoy this workout. It's got a hip, fun feel, without a lot of rehashed moves (you even get to do Wheel at the end). Kristin McGee offers up a lot of breath cueing and just enough about alignment to serve as reminders for experienced enthusiasts. The music featured is not your typical New Age Yoga soundtrack - it's sort of an electronic jazz/ R&B fusion. If it's not your thing, the DVD gives you the option of an instructor-only soundtrack. If you do like how it sounds, the DVD includes a music video by the artist. A music video on a Yoga workout DVD? Well, it is MTV, after all. To Order MTV Power Yoga on DVD
